June 16, 1909, was a grand day for Elmira, as Mayor Daniel Sheehan would marry Miss Ellen Loretta O’Herron “in a church setting which in many respects was more beautiful and impressive than any seen in this locality in years.”St.At that point, Daniel Sheehan organized a business of his own with two partners.Three years prior to Sheehan’s birth, on Dec. 2, 1859,Elmer Dean was born in a log cabin, in a thick woods near the town of Spencer. they made the right decision, for the paper announced the opening of a “Dry Goods Palace.”The paper noted that”if years of experience, pluck and energy in unlimited quantities, and friends by the thousands count for anything, the phenomenal trade which Sheehan, Dean and Co. have been doing since they opened their magnificent new dry goods store at 124 W. Water St. will not only continue but will grow in extent and volume.”Sheehan, Dean and Co., at 142 W. Water St. in Elmira, in 1895. (Photo: Provided Photo)The prediction proved correct, as the business grew so rapidly that it relocated in 1894 and in 1907 moved to occupy a new four story building at 136 142 W.
