NAVY MEN’S LACROSSE: The Navy men’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish third in the 2018 Patriot League Preseason Poll in a vote by the league’s coaches and sports information directors, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, midfielders Casey Rees and Greyson Torain were named to the preseason all league team. The Mids are coming off a fourth place finish in the Patriot League a year ago where they posted a 4 4 record.
Loyola, the reigning Patriot League Tournament Champion, secured 14 of the 18 first place votes (eligible for only 16 due to not being able to vote for your own team) and amassed 126 points to top the poll for a fifth consecutive year, which coincidentally is also its fifth season as a member of the league. Army, meanwhile, accounted for the remaining four first place votes and totaled 115 points to finish second in the balloting. Navy was third with 92 points, followed by Bucknell (78), Boston University (77), Lehigh (65), Colgate (45), Holy Cross (34) and Lafayette (16).
Spencer, who was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Player of the Year Watch List last week, was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The junior attacker has earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors in each of his first two seasons at Loyola while racking up record setting numbers.
A First Team USILA All American last year, Spencer set a Loyola and Patriot League record with 55 assists while also scoring 28 goals. He has two of the top five single season point totals in school history after logging 83 last year; as a freshman in 2016,
Spencer finished with 89 points to match the 1981 school record set by Gary Hanley.
LEHIGH MEN’S LACROSSE: Junior Craig Chick (South River) was named preseason All League, as announced on Tuesday. Chick was named defensive specialist on the preseason All League team after garnering first team All Patriot League and Inside Lacrosse honorable mention All America as a sophomore. Chick posted a school record 40 caused turnovers in 2017, one year after leading the nation with 37. Chick is already second in school history with 77 career caused turnovers, needing just 21 more to break Tripp Telesco’s school record of 97. Chick also owns three goals, nine assists and 117 groundballs through his first two years.
NAVY GYMNASTICS: The Navy gymnastics team was recognized twice on Tuesday as the duo of Andy Jones and Ryan McVay garnered weekly awards from the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Following strong efforts for the Mids at home on Saturday, Jan. 27, Jones was named the ECAC Specialist of the Week, while McVay earned the nod as ECAC Rookie of the Week.
Jones started Navy’s tri meet versus William Mary and Temple with a first place result on the floor exercise at 14.15. Three rotations later, the senior was back in action competing on the vault. He recorded a score of 14.25 that tied him for second place, just 0.1 points away from the top spot.
McVay, a freshman took part in his first all around competition as a collegiate and came away with a first place point total of 77.8. He placed in the top 10 in five of the six events including a second place on rings (13.45), second place on the horizontal bar (13.45), fifth on pommel horse 12.35, eighth in the floor exercise (13.25) and tenth on vault (13.5). McVay also posted a score of 11.8 on the parallel bars.
NAVY MEN’S TRACK FIELD: For the third time this season, Eric Hughey was named the M F Athletic Patriot League Male Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Running in the Wesley Brown Invitational, Hughey won the 500 meter dash with an IC4A qualifying time of 1:04.04 in his first time running the event. The time was the fastest of the season for the Mids and earned the plebe first place recognition in the event.
He currently sits with the fourth best time in the 500m event and sixth in the 400m event in the Patriot League this season.
This honor marks the third time this season that Hughey has been named the M F Athletic Patriot League Male Rookie of the Week.
Navy takes on Army West Point in a dual meet for both men’s and women’s track and field this Saturday.
Navy is coming off a 77 75 win at Lehigh on Saturday. Senior guard Shawn Anderson scored four points in the final 45 seconds to lead Navy back from a three point deficit.
