Rose Festival ‘business as usual’.

Protests, rallies set for weekend.

Jennifer Dowling and KOIN 6 News Staff PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) More than 300,000 people flooded to downtown Portland for the Starlight Parade, one of the biggest celebrations of the Rose Festival.

Portlanders enjoyed the parade, which has been a tradition for many families for more than 40 years. Many showed up early to reserve their spots for the best view.

“We wake up in the morning,” 12 year old Eathen Michel said. “And we just come here so we can get a good spot and it’s cool.”

Michel’s family has come to see the twinkling lights every year since he was born. Now, he’s teaching his younger brother Andrew how to pass the time with snacks. They even get their dog in on the fun.

“He’s name is Ugg and he’s four months old and he’s fun to play with,” Michel said.

John Guillory said this is probably his 25th time watching the parade, but he missed it last year because his son Liam made his own grand entrance.

“This is his very first parade,” Guillory said. “He wasactually born while it was going on last year, so we couldn’t really attend last year.”

TriMet officials warned riders to expect delays in service due to the parade. Bus lines 6, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 54, 56 and 77 will be detoured and MAX trains will have to stop for several minutes at some stationsduring the parade. They also expect long waits and crowded vehicles with people heading home after the parade.
