The military plans to spend about $500 million on construction at the North Pole area base in preparation for the arrival of the new fighter jets in 2020. The Eielson F 35 are the first of their kind that the Air Force plans to base outside thecontiguous United States. F 35 are single engine, fifth generation fighter jets designed to replace a wide variety of older planes including F 16s and A 10s.
